Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Common Questions: Understanding Assessments & Support

What happens at the consultation?

At an advice consultation, I’ll take time to listen to your concerns and go through any reports or information you’ve shared. It’s not a formal assessment, but if your child is with you, I may chat with them or do a quick check-up if needed.

For diagnostic assessments, I aim to create a calm, welcoming space. Your child can play while we talk, and during the one-to-one part, I usually ask parents to stay to help your child stay focused.

At the end of every session, I share my initial thoughts and offer practical advice. A detailed written report with recommendations will follow.

Do I need to have an assessment?

No, not at all. Many families come just for an advice consultation. I’ll help guide you on whether a formal assessment might be useful and what support your child may benefit from—now or in the future.

Does my child need a diagnosis to get support?

Not necessarily. Schools and other services should provide support based on your child’s needs, with or without a formal diagnosis. That said, a diagnosis can sometimes help professionals understand your child better and justify additional support.

Can my child still be seen on the NHS if we see you privately?

Yes, absolutely. My assessments are completely independent of your NHS care. If needed, my reports can help support referrals through your GP to NHS services.

Do I need a GP referral to book an appointment with you?

No GP referral is needed to see me privately. However, a GP referral can be helpful—and most insurance companies do require one if you plan to claim for the assessment.

Why do you ask for reports from school or nursery?

For certain assessments—especially for ADHD or Autism—it’s essential to gather information from other settings to build a full picture of your child’s development. This is done with your consent, and helps make sure the assessment is as accurate and helpful as possible.

What are your fees?

Fees vary depending on the type of consultation or assessment. Please get in touch directly and I’ll be happy to provide this information.
